Experts at JLR Essex have warned drivers of windscreen issues being worsened by the frost and plummeting temperatures. Drivers have been warned not to pour boiling water on their windscreens as this can lead to it being damaged further.

In some cases, pouring boiling water onto the car windscreen to help melt frost, ice and snow could actually crack or shatter the glass due to extreme temperatures.

While it may be tempting to quickly thaw the windscreen with hot water, the rapid temperatures change can cause the glass to shatter.

It can also damage paintwork when the boiling water melts off protective wax and leaves a white watermark stain.

Neil Hutchinson, expert at JLR Essex, advised drivers of the dangers of how the cold weather can affect drivers’ windscreens.

“A cracked windscreen can not only hinder your vision when driving, it can cause a car to fail its MOT if the crack is within the drivers eye line.

“What can start as a chip can spread extremely quickly into a full crack and this can become costly when needing a repair.

“Cold weather causes chips to freeze and become brittle, increasing the likelihood of a full crack.

“To prevent this, park your car where it is undercover and protected from the elements when parking overnight.

“If this isn’t possible, consider investing in a windscreen cover.

“This will prevent your windscreen freezing at all, but doesn’t cover every window so you will still need to de-ice the rest of your windows.

“Potholes are reportedly plaguing our roads, with the RAC reporting ‘its worst third quarter for pothole breakdowns in 15 years’.

“So getting ahead of the cooler temperatures will be beneficial in the long run, as temperatures drop.”
