Driving after Brexit: Drivers will need vital documents to travel to Europe within days

Brexit: President of AA explains post-Brexit driving rules

But Brexit means new rules for drivers travelling to Europe with the fresh legislation set to come into effect from 1 January. There has been wide-ranging confusion over the past few months over what drivers would need when travelling to the continent.

However, changes will be introduced in just days with many drivers possibly caught out by a wave of new documentation which will be needed at the borders.

Consumer site Which? has confirmed UK driving licences will continue to be allowed in EU countries after the end of the transition period.

Visa-free travel is still possible for up to 90 days in a 180 day period meaning those travelling on holidays are unlikely to face many delays.

However, Which? said drivers will need a passport with at least six months left to be allowed into Europe under the new measures.

Car insurance green card

Despite allowing drivers to travel into Europe without the need for an International Driving Licence, green cards will still be needed.

Which? said these green cards act as an international certificate of insurance proving you are insured to drive a car abroad.

The consumer watchdog warned drivers will need a physical copy of their green card when travelling into Europe.

These are not automatically issued by insurers with drivers needing to apply for one before a trip.

However, these can take up to six weeks with drivers needing to print this out in physical form instead of relying on email correspondence.

In a major warning to road users, Which? said anyone leaving the country from now on should take their green card with them.

They said: “You could be asked to show your Green Card from 1 January 2021 onwards.

“Even if you’re departing the UK in December 2020, you need to take one with you if you’re not going to be returning from Europe until the New Year.”

Extra paperwork

Which? has warned drivers will need to take their vehicle log book (V5C) documents with them when travelling abroad.

This is used to prove a driver owns the vehicle at the time of travel and could be checked at the border.

Drivers will also need to carry a VE103 certificate if they plan to drive a hire car out of the UK and into Europe.

Motorists who are planning to hire a car when they get to Europe may need to show a digital record of their driving licence to receive a vehicle.

Which? has also confirmed drivers will need a GB sticker to be placed on their vehicles when travelling abroad.

This will still be needed even if your car’s number plate already includes a GB marking.
