The new fuel was brought in by the Government and the Department for Transport to act as a cleaner and more green petrol. It is blended with up to 10 percent renewable ethanol and made up of materials such as low-grade grains, sugars and waste wood, making it greener than existing petrol.

The change could cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year, which is the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off of UK roads.

This is expected to help the UK move closer to the Government’s climate goals as they prepare to host the COP26 climate conference in November.

The RAC estimates that as many as 600,000 vehicles on roads are not compatible with the fuel.

New research has shown that a number of all models for some car brands are compatible with E10 fuel.

German car brands including Audi, BMW and Maybach are all compatible with E10.

Models from Japanese car makers Honda, Mitsubishi and Suzuki can all accept E10 petrol, as can South Korean brands Hyundai and Kia.

Other brands like Dacia, Seat, Skoda, Smart and Vauxhall have made all of their models compatible with the new petrol.

This means whether drivers have a 1972 Audi Coupe or a 2019 Maybach S Class, E10 will work for them.
