Forum Friday: Mid-Engine Norwegian Golf Racer

We hope you don’t have much planned for your Friday because you’re gonna get lost in this week’s highlighted thread. If you’ve ever dreamed of a highly-specialized and incredibly custom MK2 Golf, then you’ll love this one.

Waaaay back in 2007, VWvortex member bikkjaa started a thread that has been viewed over 2,500,000 times. If there’s a Vortex Thread Hall of Fame, this one would be included. We often think that threads that are 20 or more pages are epic. This one spans…wait for it…134 pages. Like we said; clear your calendar to read this entire thing.

And you’ll want to truly read this thread. Over the span of years, bikkjaa documents his build. A build that takes a pretty nice looking blue MK2 Golf, and turns it into a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, honest-to-God race car. Along the way, he shares the many iterations the car goes through, including building his own fiberglass body kit and body panels, building a custom tube frame, and many many engine upgrades. You’ll also see how this guy starts with some great fabrication skills, and along the way, he gets even better.

A couple of spoilers; bikkjaa is from Norway, so you probably won’t ever catch a glimpse of this great car at your local raceway. And sadly, this incredibly epic build thread hasn’t been updated since December 2015. Several Vortex members have bumped the thread, but it’s radio silence from bikkjaa. We hope all is well with him, and maybe as this hits various social networks, it’ll get back to him and he’ll jump back in with new updates.

Regardless, the pics and videos are still live, so enjoy them. But settle in for a nice long read.
