British motorists should top up ahead of the bank holiday as prices are expected to soar, according to new research. The long weekend is a perfect excuse for people to get away and it is estimated that around 16 million drivers could be hitting the roads in the UK. Confused.com’s fuel price index reveals the average cost of fuel in April has increased by as much as 4.5p per litre compared to one month ago.
The fuel price index suggests that petrol prices have risen in the past week by almost 1p (0.9p) to 126.7p per litre.
What this means is motorists that drive a medium sized car with a 57-litre fuel tank could face paying £72 for a full tank of fuel.
Diesel motorists face a 0.7p increase per litre over the same period of time taking prices to a staggering 133p per litre of diesel.
It will now on average cost equivalent to £76 to fill up a medium sized tank.
Motorists are, however, aware that prices tend to soar over the course of a bank holiday with one in six seeing rises in their local area and over a fifth believing motorway service station prices increase.
Drivers could use the fuel price index to see what the average price of fuel is in a certain area of the UK to see if they are paying over the odds.
Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, says: “To some, the bank holiday weekend means extra time off work.
“But it also appears to some drivers, this means an increase in fuel prices.
“And with prices increasing, it’s no wonder drivers are confused about how to spot a good deal.
