Holley LS Fest 10 Burnout Contest

Burning rubber is pretty much a mandatory practice when your project hits the streets for the first time. It’s just the right thing to do. Think of it like christening your yacht and busting bottle of Champagne or red wine on the bow. What? You don’t have a yacht? We don’t either, so we’ll stick to the act of smoking tires as the most practical means for having good luck with our rides.

At the 2019 Holley LS Fest, dubbed 10 Years of Mayhem, the Tuning School Burnout Challenge was for new rides as well as seasoned street beasts looking to fry some tires. This burnout competition is always a popular attraction, but this year was the biggest one yet. There were more entries than in prior events and the massive crowd of thousands filled the stands to capacity well before the event got started, leaving standing room only. In fact, many folks got creative and resorted to standing up on top of golf carts and pickup truck beds to take in the smoke-filled action.

This competition is reflective of an “Aussie-style” burnout contest where the participants are cut loose on the Beech Bend oval to let it all hang out. Or as LS Fest announcer Chad Reynolds put it, “let the big dog eat.” And eat they did as a few cars took their tires down to the bitter end, leaving a trail of tire cords and chunks of rubber on the asphalt along with the sound of grinding metal and massive crowd approval.

This is a winner-take-all competition where the participant who gets the loudest cheers from the capacity crowd wins.

In the end, it wasn’t a Chevy that won, instead it was a methanol-powered Fairmont with an LS under the hood. The crowd loved it, we loved it, and are looking forward to LS Fest 11. There’s a Spinal Tap joke in there somewhere and we’ll be sure tell it when the time comes. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this gallery of the hottest photos from the 2019 Holley LS Fest, Tuning School Burnout Contest.
