Hot Wheels Unleased: First Gameplay Video

Italian developer Milestone and toy manufacturer Mattel have revealed the first official gameplay footage of Hot Wheels Unleashed, due for release later this year.

Hot Wheels Unleashed puts you into the tiny world of toy cars, and will see gamers race some of the model line’s most famous machines on fantasy race tracks, made from that classic orange plastic. As you might expect, it’s a very arcade-oriented title with quite a novel look, but the new video lets us see the game in action for the first time.

As you’ll spot throughout the clip, the gameplay is from a pre-alpha build, so some of what you see here might not end up in the final game, but it gives a good impression of what to expect. The two-minute video features a couple of cinematics, but mainly centers on three racing sequences:

The final game will feature 40 circuit layouts on day one, set in six different environments — as you can proably tell from the clip, this one is the Garage environment. As well as the iconic orange track, the circuits can interact with the environment, with the cars heading into air conditioning ducts in the video above. If 40 circuits aren’t enough, the game also features a track editor so you can build your own, just like the real thing.

You’ll also spot boost pads and acceleration zones in the classic arcade style, along with jumps, ramps, and the famous Hot Wheels loops. The tracks also seem to have their own interactive obstacles, as you can spot when a spider prop shoots webbing at an AI car. There’s also a boost system, which tops up as you perform stunts like jumping and drifting, allowing you a burst of extra speed.

Milestone has also confirmed there’ll be more than 60 cars in the game when it arrives on September 30. It’s already revealed six, which you’ll see in the clip above: Dragon Blaster, Night Shifter, Rip Rod, Rodger Dodger, Sharkruiser, and Twin Mill. Others are set to arrive at a later date, with paid DLC planned.

Hot Wheels Unleashed will be available for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic, on September 30.
