Jaguar I-Pace named 2019 European Car of the Year

The Jaguar I-Pace has been named the 2019 European Car of the Year prior to the start of the Geneva Motor Show. However, it wasn’t an outright victory for the all-electric SUV, as it was tied with the Alpine A110 on the top of the voting chart with 250 points each.

In the end, the I-Pace was declared the winner after a tiebreak based on how many judges had given a first-place vote to each car, which were 18 for the I-Pace and 16 for the A110. This is the first time a Jaguar has won the coveted prize, and the I-Pace has already won the 2019 German Car of the Year and 2019 UK Car of the Year awards.

Further down the list, the Kia Ceed was just three points behind the leaders with 247 points, while the Ford Focus accumulated 235 points. Other finalists include the Citroën C5 Aircross with 210 points, Peugeot 508 with 192 points, and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class with 116 points.

For our first electric vehicle to also be the first Jaguar to win European Car of the Year gives us a huge sense of pride. (The) I-Pace was designed and engineered in the UK from a clean sheet of paper,” said Ralf Steph, CEO at Jaguar Land Rover.

“It is the most technologically advanced battery electric vehicle. It’s a true game-changer. Winning European Car of the Year is an honour and real recognition of what our world-class team has delivered,” he added. Last year’s winner of the award was also an SUV, the Volvo XC40.
