The Grand Tour: Richard Hammond on meeting for new series
The Grand Tour: Eurocrash will follow Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May around Central and Eastern Europe for an epic 1,400-mile tour through Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia.
Along the way, they will be driving some Soviet-style Formula 1 sports cars, get attacked by lethal archers, recruit a famous racing driver and end in spectacular fashion.
As always, the legendary trio will do it in style. Some of the highlights include an outrageous Japanese Al Capone gangster car, a pickup that thinks it’s a convertible and a 75-year-old American micro mini.
The presenters have covered almost nearly the whole planet across their storied careers, including the Middle East, North Africa and the infamous South American tour.
They wanted this new road trip to be one that “nobody has ever thought of, in cars nobody would ever use for a road trip”.
The plan is to drive from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic Sea to admit the countries that used to be behind the Iron Curtain.
Jeremy Clarkson also highlighted how many of the countries where they have filmed before have either banned them or have become very dangerous, like Syria and Argentina.
He added: “Having decided to do a road trip nobody’s ever thought of, we decided we’d do it in cars that no one had ever thought of taking on a road trip before. Which brought me immediately to the Mitsuoka Le-Seyde, which is a hideous homage to Liberace’s bathroom.
“It’s effectively a very ordinary Nissan underneath. You have the Nissan interior and gearbox and engine and all those things, so it’s reliable, but Mr Mitsuoka has then removed the body and replaced it with – I can’t even begin to describe it.
“He thinks it looks like an old 1930s Mercedes, but it doesn’t. It’s a ghastly-looking thing, but it’s certainly striking.”

Richard, perhaps unsurprisingly, chose a large convertible American pick-up truck with a powerful V8 engine, which was described as a “speed hump on a runway”.
Commenting on the new Amazon Prime special, Richard Hammond said: “We all, I think, really enjoyed this one. I think we had some real moments of genuine friendship and joy when we were making each other laugh properly.
“And I think it’s going to be compelling to watch. It’s lovely when three people who have known each other that long can still reduce each other to tears of laughter. That sounded a bit soppy but it’s true.
“There were some really spontaneous moments. There were certain scenes where we knew there would be something there, but we didn’t know what, and it just unfolded naturally, which is lovely.”
James May bought his Crosley microcar when he was drunk and had to switch to a backup car, with Jeremy saying this made him “look like an imbecile”.

He admitted that terrible cars are better for storytelling, admitting that he was shocked by how ugly the Crosley was, saying that he became a “bit obsessed with it”.
James May added: “It’s American and if you were being polite, you’d say it was cream but it’s actually beige. It just looked so bizarre and terrible.
“At that point, the bidding was only up to something like £500 but I think I ended up paying £12,000. Never drink wine and bid.”
