When Lamborghini unveiled a new generation of its iconic Countach supercar at this year’s Monterey Car Week, critics—us included—weighed in and had a field day. Based on the mixed reactions, it appears that the 2022 Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4, although already sold out, has missed the retro-revival mark and, well, simply does not live up to the pop culture phenom of the 1980s it’s supposed to commemorate.
The Italian automaker has something else in the works, and this time, it may involve the resurrection of an early Countach in prototype form. Today in a mysterious tweet, Lamborghini said that it has some exciting news. Upon reviewing the vague press release associated with this announcement, we know this much: Whatever Lambo is talking about, it is from 50 years ago, has a zany disco-era seat design, and is loud.
We don’t have much confirmation to theorize the exact model or that Lamborghini is working on a restoration project, but that black leather seat in the video is very reminiscent of the chair design used in the LP500 prototype and early Countach models. While Lambo’s project could also be a recreation—the original LP500 prototype was said to be used in crash testing and then scrapped, meaning there is no car to “restore” per se—here’s to hoping the secret project, if Countach-related, does a better job of highlighting one of Lamborghini’s most poster-worthy creations of all time than the “new” Countach.
