Maxed Out! 2024 Chevy Silverado Gets Diesel ZR2 + TurboMax 4-Cylinder

Wait, wasn’t the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 just updated for 2022? It was—and now the bow-tie brand’s full-size pickup is getting another round of changes, though they’re more detailed than the all-new interior and revised styling that landed two years ago, including new names and a hotted-up diesel.

SilveradoMax?

The biggest news concerns what’s going on under the Silverado’s hood for 2024. Though nothing about the gas-fed turbocharged 2.7-liter I-4 engine option changes (it still makes 310 hp and a stout 430 lb-ft of torque), it adopts new “TurboMax” branding, bringing it line with Chevy’s [insert-name-here]Max engine naming convention. This TurboMax brand name also will spread to the new-for-2023 midsize Colorado, which only is available with the 2.7-liter turbo engine (albeit with different outputs).

Speaking of ‘Maxes, the light-duty DuraMax diesel offering, a 3.0-liter inline-six, is now available on the rugged Silverado 1500 ZR2 off-road model. Previously, it came only with the Silverado lineup’s range-topping V-8, a 6.2-liter, 420-hp unit shared with the luxurious High Country trim. As with the newly christened TurboMax I-4, the DuraMax diesel is otherwise unchanged, though we’re sure off-roaders will appreciate pairing the capable ZR2 upgrades with the diesel’s 495 lb-ft of torque and general grunt. Fuel economy figures for the diesel-equipped ZR2 are forthcoming, but it’s a safe bet they’ll be better than those of the V-8-powered Silverado 1500 ZR2.

Dovetailing right into that V-8, again, there are no changes to the engine itself, but Chevrolet has given the 6.2-liter specifically a new active exhaust system with a Sport mode. This can be quieted down for calmer cruising or dialed up for more bark, depending on the selected drive mode. No changes are outlined for the mid-level 5.3-liter V-8 engine, nor is its availability any different from before.

The Other Changes…

Chevrolet’s fiddling extends beyond the 2024 Silverado’s engine bay, but the changes beyond are similarly minor. Base Work Truck (WT) models now include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making the feature standard across the ’24 Silverado 1500 lineup. Silverado WTs also will get front and rear parking sensors included in their optional safety package. Adaptive cruise control is now standard on the High Country.

The Silverado’s Midnight package (blackout trim, etc.) is now available on the High Country, as well, while a highly similar-sounding Blackout Appearance package is offered on the Custom, Custom and LT Trail Bosses, and the ZR2. Oh, and there is a rear-seat belt indicator on models with rear seats, and two new paint colors to choose from: Lakeshore Blue and Slate Gray.

Pricing and other details on the 2024 Silverado’s shuffled engine availability, option packages, and the like will be released closer to the truck’s on-sale date later this year.
