The predicted Autumn surge in demand will hit Birmingham hardest with an extra 22,555 vehicles needing tests as a result of the MOT extension. Other popular cities such as Nottingham, Glasgow and Reading are set to be affected by the backlog as the DVSA urges drivers to book in tests as soon as they can.

Peterborough is the second most affected city with an extra 16,422 tests needing to be carried out over the next couple of months.

Sheffield is the third largest hotspot with 16,215 vehicles needing to get their car tested this Autumn.

Over 15,800 extra tests are needed in Leicester with 14,556 needed in Glasgow and 13,794 in Nottingham.

Over 13,500 extra vehicles will need MOT’s in Reading with over 12,000 required in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Bristol, and Cardiff.

MOT extensions were put in place at the start of the pandemic to help protect drivers and exam staff.

However, the extensions mean more vehicles will need an MOT this Autumn putting pressure on garages.

It means drivers may struggle to get an MOT test unless they book in at their local garage early.

DVSA’s Head of Roads Policy, Chris Price said slots would be “harder to come by” over the coming months.

He said: “DVSA’s priority is to help everyone keep their vehicle safe to drive.

“While we’re sure everyone will be able [to] get a test for their vehicle, slots will be harder to come by.

“If you want to use your usual garage and guarantee a slot before your expiry date, you should give them a call now and get it booked in.”

The DVSA reminds drivers MOT tests can be carried out up to one calendar month prior to the expiry date of an existing certificate.
