DVLA number plate changes come into effect on 1 September and will see manufacturers and car dealers swap out older models for new stock. However, experts at BuyaCar.co.uk have warned road users are “less concerned” about having a new plate meaning cars at cheaper rates could sell well over the next week.

They revealed that current vehicles are “good enough for many people” who could snap up discounted vehicles in the next few days due to heavy discounts offered before a plate change.

But Christofer Lloyd, editor of BuyaCar.co.uk has suggested the discounts may not be the last bargain of the year.

He said: “Motorists are less concerned than ever before about having the very latest registration plate on the drive, so a current year car is more than good enough for many people.

“The impressive array of savings on many low mileage cars registered this year is bound to put even more pressure on September’s new plate launch, which is always the last big push of the year for dealers and manufacturers.

“But we believe that these savings on 2020 cars are not the last we will see of major bargains this year.

“September is bound to bring heavy discounting on brand new cars too, as the industry fights to recover from its worst year in living memory, due to the Coronavirus crisis.”

Experts at the firm say the financial difficulty for dealers could spell good news for motorists.

Car dealerships have faced their biggest decline in new car sales for decades over the summer as many temporarily closed their doors due to the pandemic.

Deals are usually offered at a new number plate change as dealerships try and sell older stock to create showroom space for new models.

Dealerships will also be desperate to meet their sales targets after months of adversity that they are more inclined to offer cheaper models to prospective buyers.

BuyaCar says road users can save up to 42 percent on some of the most popular cars of 2020 with as little as just 10 miles on the clock.

They reveal up to 35 percent can be saved on a 2020 Volkswagen Passat which is available for just over £20,000 compared to a previous list price of £31,300.

Drivers are also able to save money on luxurious models such as the Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ.

The popular Audi is available for just £46,400 compared to its previous list price of almost £79,000.

The massive 41 percent saving could entice road users to splash their lockdown savings on a new model.

For those looking for a cheaper model, drivers can save more than a third off a small Peugeot 108.

BuyaCar says a bargain Citroen C2 with just 10 miles on the clock is available for just over £9,500 in a massive 35 percent saving.

Family models such as the Vauxhall Astra can also be purchased with savings of up to 39 percent with drivers able to knick over £10,000 off the list price.

BuyaCar has also picked out models such as the Peugeot 308, Citroen C4 and Volvo S60 as affordable family models which could come with massive discounts.

Higher performance models such as the Mercedes S Class are available for 28 percent cheaper with the eclectic BMW i8 also seeing prices fall by up to 36 percent.

The discounts ensure road users can save over £5,000 on a new model which was previously listed at £14,700.
