The Volkswagen Arteon has made its first appearance in Malaysia at the paultan.org Premium Auto Car Expo (PACE) 2018 in Setia Alam, where it is on preview ahead of its official launch for the Malaysian market.
This particular unit on display is from Singapore, and as such it’s not completely representative of the specification that is slated for Malaysia. Given its positioning in the model hierarchy, the Arteon will be priced above the Passat and most likely carry a higher level of specification as a result.
The Arteon launched for our southern neighbours at the start of this year was made available for that market in two variants, both powered by a 2.0 litre TSI turbocharged engined producing 280 PS and 350 Nm of torque. These outputs are sent the all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and 4Motion permanent all-wheel-drive.
These are corralled by Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), which offers multiple drive modes – Eco, Normal, Comfort, Sport and Individual – as well as an XDS electronic differential lock. Meanwhile, rolling stock on the display car here are 19-inch Montevideo wheels.
Items available from German marque’s Arteon kit list – but not confirmed for Malaysia – include LED lighting units front and rear, Silver Rise aluminium inlays, leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, Nappa leather seats with “carbon-style” inner faces and R-Line embroidery, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof and 14-way power-adjustable seats.
On the infotainment front, there’s a 12.3-inch Active Info Display, heads-up display, 9.2-inch touchscreen, Discover Pro infotainment system and a 700-watt Dynaudio sound system with 12 speakers and 12-channel digital amplifier.
Following its global debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the Arteon scored a five-star rating in Euro NCAP, with a five-star rating in the safety assist category, scoring 82% for its active safety systems. The scoring included consideration for seatbelt fastening reminders for all seats, cruise control, front assist with emergency braking function, and lane keeping assist.
Of course, these are among the features that could be included in the Malaysian-market Arteon, though we will need to wait a little longer before we know for sure. Just under two months remain for this year, so the Arteon’s Malaysian launch could take place some time in 2019.
