Peugeot to develop a range of electrified sports cars

After launching its new line of plug-in hybrid vehicles at the Paris Motor Show, Peugeot has revealed that it will channel resources into the development of a new range of electrified sports cars, which will debut by 2020. The decision also means that the automaker will withdraw its participation in the FIA World Rallycross Championship once the 2018 season ends, due to uncertainties over the series’ move towards electrification.

The upcoming range of high-performance, low-emission electrified sports vehicles will be developed in collaboration with Peugeot Sports, and the company says the cars will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

“Driving pleasure is at the heart of the brand’s history. Electrification is a new opportunity to offer new high-performance versions to our customers looking for low-emission sports sensations. Driving sensations will be amplified by the performance provided by electrification, “Peugeot CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said.

“New territories are to be explored, new challenges to be met, the adventure of the Peugeot brand continues for an exciting future. Boredom will never be part of our DNA,” he added.

The move tallies with a recent report that revealed that Peugeot Sport is working on a new plug-in hybrid R performance model, one that will pack a 350-hp from a 1.6 litre turbocharged plug-in powertrain. It’s rumoured to come with two powerful electric motors, giving the car a 0-100 km/h time of around 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.

The 508 R will be based on the same EMP2 platform and is likely to get an independent multi-link rear suspension. Other features include an aluminium bonnet and front fenders, composite boot lid and 20-inch light alloy wheels. At launch, it will take on German rivals like the Audi S4 and Mercedes-AMG C 43.
