Sat nav WARNING: Police warn drivers about this simple mistake which could land you a fine

Motorists have been warned about how they use a sat nav while driving after issuing a warning to a motorist making an error.

Greater Manchester Police stopped a driver for the placement of their sat nav.

The driver had their sat nav centrally above the steering wheel which could obstruct the view of the motorist.

Officers pulled over the motorist on the hard shoulder to inform him of the dangers of mounting the sat nav in such a way.

It tweeted: “This vehicle was stopped and driver given advice regarding the placement of his Sat Nav.

“This was clearly obstructing his view and directly in his line of sight.

“You must have a full clear view of the road and traffic ahead, obstructing this is an offence. #drivesafe”

A spokesman for Lancashire Police added: “There were two child passengers in the car which led us to take immediate action.

“The driver having been given advice removed the sat nav to a more appropriate place.”

The driver was issued with a traffic offence report (TOR) but managed to continue his journey without a fine or subsequent punishment.

Motorists are warned that is illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle.

You must have hands-free access, such as a Bluetooth headset, voice command, a dashboard holder or mat, a windscreen mount and a built-in sat nav.

Gov.uk advice also states that the device must also not block your view of the road ahead.

Motorists could land a fine for being distracted or not having full control of their vehicle as a result of one of these devices.
