The hidden motorway lane which some UK drivers don’t know about

There is a new hidden lane on some dual carriageways which could increase road traffic and capacity by as much as a third. According to new reports, there is a secret lane which exists on certain motorways. Some drivers are seemingly unaware about the ’hidden’ third lane on motorways such as the M1 and M69 in Leicestershire. There is a third lane to the left of the middle and right-hand lanes which motorists are allowed to use.

There is a perception that the lane is exclusively reserved for lorry driver and those driving caravans, according to Leicestershire Live.

Rule 137 and 138 of the Highway Code says: “A dual carriageway is a road which has a central reservation to separate the carriageways.

“On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane.

“Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right.

“After overtaking, move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

“On a three-lane dual carriageway, you may use the middle lane or the right-hand lane to overtake but return to the middle and then the left-hand lane when it is safe.”
