Luxury German automaker Porsche has been ranked as the most unreliable marque, following analysis of over 131,000 extended car warranty plans. A new report finds that Porsche scored a mere 35.1 out of 100 on the Warrantywise used car Reliability Index and reported having staggering repair bills.

Based on thousands of warranty plans, Porsche was found to have the highest repair cost of £10,784.60 – more than the price of some used cars.

Used Land Rovers placed in second place with a reliability score of 40.2, but with the highest repair cost on the list at £23,889.53.

Land Rover also saw its Range Rover model named as the least reliable model in an earlier list this year.

Its UK counterpart, Jaguar, places third from bottom, with the engine’s turbocharger proving the costliest single repair at £16,990.02.

A handful of other premium luxury passenger car makers feature on the least reliable list, proving that despite a high price tag, even for a used car, luxury cars could also cost owners more in the long run.

The Reliability Index ranks every car on a combination of factors, including the cost to carry out repairs, how often they encounter issues and how many days it takes to get them fixed.

Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of Warrantywise, analysed the data, highlighting how premium price tags can also come with premium repair bills.

He said: “Premium prices really do make for premium costs, as is evident from the data in the Reliability Index.

“And, with more technology in high-end cars than ever before, we suppose it’s only natural that they require a bit more TLC than normal.

“As the concept of luxury has expanded and become more available to a wider audience, high-end supercars are clearly still in high demand.

“One way of ensuring that your pride and joy is safe and affordable in the long run is by purchasing a warranty, and we always strive to make sure our customers have the best possible service and product.”

Repair costs were collated over a period between 2021 and 2022, with Warrantywise seeing a significant rise in the price of labour and parts, which will impact future repair costs.

In September, the Honda Jazz was crowned Britain’s most reliable used car thanks to its low payout costs.

The five-door hatchback has been praised for its affordable price and stellar reputation of being built to last. Because of this, the Jazz has attracted a reliability score of 93.7, almost four points more than the second-placed Mazda 2.

It has an average repair cost of only £424.31 for the Jazz, with the highest repair cost coming in at £973.66. This is almost £1,500 cheaper than repair costs for other popular vehicles.

The Reliability Index, which is based on precise and quantifiable data, found that the Mazda MX-5 had the cheapest, highest repair cost at just £586.94.

However, the Japanese brand also saw the highest repair cost with one unlucky driver of the Mazda 2 seeing their repair bill hitting £2,422.

Despite this, the Mazda 2 is the second most reliable model with a score of 89.9, followed closely by the Toyota Auris.
