The optimism of the Midwestern Mercury owner

Here in Denver, most cars don't rust so much, thanks to the lack of road salt and single-digit humidity. However, nearly everyone here comes from the Upper Midwest, where the Rust Monster is an old (if unwanted) friend, and so plenty of cars from Minnesota and Illinois and Michigan end up here.

Here's the flank of a 1970s Mercury Marquis, spotted in a High Plains wrecking yard, that shows a mosaic of pop-riveted patch panels, body filler, and color-matched paint that dare oxidation to undo the repair. As you'd expect, oxidation won that battle, but there is integrity in the battle and that's what counts.
