This Ford GT40 Movie Rig From “Ford V Ferrari” Looks Absurd

To film good racing action, you need more than a computer-generated background and a prop car. If you want it to feel real, you’ve gotta get out on a track for real. Since Ford V Ferrari is one of the highest-profile racing movies in recent history, they had to do just that.

In a behind-the-scenes video posted by on YouTube by Fab TV , you can see how the production team accomplished some of the on-the-track angles that put you right in the heart of the action. You can also see the stable of cars that were on hand for the shoot, which includes a lot of gorgeous vintage Ferraris.

More importantly, you can see the insane rigs they built to get camera angles from the race cars. The production used a giant tube-framed, low-slung car carrier to get shots of cars on the move while keeping the body unobstructed.

For the shots of the GT40 doing aerodynamic testing, though, they built something even cooler. They used the front of a GT40, but grafted it onto a a platform that supports an external driver and mounting points. With that setup, they can get shots of the outside of the GT40 on the track without having to mount bulk camera rigs on the oddly shaped and old bodywork of a real GT40. You can see some close-ups of the car at around the 4:50 mark in the video above.

It’s worth a watch for sure, though we should note that there are weird dead spots where you can’t hear anything in the video. Ford V Ferrari comes out on Nov. 15.
