Toyota Corolla Hybrid Debuts As Normal-Looking Prius

The electrified powertrain doesn’t affect cabin space and gets at least 50 mpg combined.

Following on the debut of the next-generation Toyota Corolla earlier in November, the brand now follows up the combustion-powered version by detailing a new hybrid powertrain for the sedan. It arrives in Spring 2019 as the first time ever that Americans can get the popular model in electrified form.








The Corolla Hybrid derives its powertrain from the Prius. A 1.8-liter four-cylinder connects to two motor-generators, and the system has a total output of 121 horsepower (90 kilowatts). It runs through a CVT. Toyota promises at least 50 miles per gallon combined fuel economy from this setup.

A nickel-metal hydride battery hides under the rear seat. The pack doesn’t affect cabin or cargo space versus the combustion-powered Corolla. The rear bench maintains its 60/40 split, too.

Drivers can pick between multiple driving modes, too. Normal is the default; Eco puts an emphasis on efficiency; Sport offers better acceleration, and EV forces electric-only motoring when enough juice is available.

To recuperate energy, a smart braking system emphasizes using the electric motors for regeneration. Traditional brakes aid the electrical system when necessary.

There’s also a novel differential. At low powertrain loads, it routes torque between the left and right wheels. The device functions as a traditional open differential at higher engine loads.

Other than some extra badges, the Corolla Hybrid looks a whole lot like its combustion-powered counterpart. It rides on a set of 15-inch wheels with low-rolling resistance tires as a way to maximize efficiency. Inside, there is the eight-inch infotainment display from higher Corolla trim levels, and the company’s Safety Sense 2.0 driver assistance suite carries over, too, which includes a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane tracing assist, high beam assist, and road sign recognition.
