Volvo XC40 all-electric to be launched before end-2019

Volvo has revealed that its fully-electric version of its XC40 before the end of the year, Automotive News reports. The timeline follows that projected last year by the company, when it said that the brand’s first battery-powered electric would arrive following the launch of the Polestar 2.

There are no details about the XC40’s drive system as yet, but the Polestar 2 – which was revealed in February and had its public debut in Geneva last month – provides a bit of a glimpse, even if system output and range will likely be trimmed on the compact SUV.

The Polestar 2 is equipped with a pair of electric motors, each producing 150 kW (204 hp) and 330 Nm of torque, on each axle to provide all-wheel drive. With a 78 kWh battery, the car yields a range of up to 500 km on the new, more stringent WLTP cycle.

If anything, expect the all-electric version to be around the output levels managed by the XC40 T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid version, which was announced last year, with a T4 Twin Engine version set to follow.

The electric XC40 is the first solid step in the Swedish automaker’s electrification plans, which aims to have an electrified version of every model in its line-up from this year on, be it in the form of a mild hybrid, hybrid or battery-electric powertrain. It has also stated it expects half of its global sales to come from full-electric models by 2025.
