Yo Ho! Lincoln’s New Corsair SUV Sets Sail for New York

Lincoln has teased the shape of its new Corsair compact SUV along with confirming that the reveal is coming April 17 at the 2019 New York International Auto Show. Lincoln parent Ford has confirmed that the new Corsair is based on the underpinning of the redesigned 2020 Ford Escape and is expected to replace Lincoln's MKC, which is based on the outgoing Escape.

For the record, a corsair is a pirate or pirate's ship, so Lincoln is extending its adventurous theme of transportation and nautical names. We're just happy it appears to be sticking a cutlass in its confusing MK model names in favor of words you can keep straight — only the aging and on-their-way-out MKT SUV and MKZ sedan remain.

Lincoln provided no specifics on its new SUV. The Corsair will give the Ford luxury label a needed fresh face in the hot market for luxury compact SUVs. And with recent new-model introductions, it has done a very good job with stylish designs that distance Lincolns from their Ford cousins. We expect a new top Black Label trim, too, matching those high-end trim levels on other new Lincoln SUVs.

The current MKC offers front- or all-wheel drive and is powered by a 245-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter, with a 285-hp, turbo 2.3-liter available. Details of the new Escape, which also shares front- and all-wheel drive with the global Focus sedan, are due to be out ahead of the New York show on April 2.
