1974 Chevrolet Caprice Has a Decidedly Uptown Air

The prestige demarcations between the various GM car divisions got increasingly blurry as the 1970s went on; no longer did a GM buyer necessarily start with a Chevy and then—with increasing financial success—work up through Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac in that order. By 1974, the Chevrolet Division offered a loaded Caprice Classic four-door hardtop that cost $4,534 (about $25,335 today), more than the $4,347 Pontiac Catalina hardtop and $4,341 Oldsmobile Delta 88 hardtop, both of which were built on the same platform as the Caprice. Why, even the Buick LeSabre four-door hardtop cost just $4,482 that year, but then did your typical ’74 Buick shopper have sideburns like Caprice Classic Man?
