The XJ Jeep Cherokee was such a big hit for American Motors that Chrysler kept cranking out the unibody-based compact SUVs all the way into the 21st century after acquiring AMC in 1987. For the 1986 model year, the AMC suits in Kenosha decided that a pickup version of the Cherokee would be a profit-maker, and so the XJ-based Comanche pickup was born. The Comanche never came close to the Cherokee's sales success, and examples are tough to find today. After the 1992 model year, Chrysler dropped the Comanche and concentrated on selling Dodge Dakotas.
