Fisker is promising big things from its upcoming electric SUV

Why is there a grille if there’s no engine? Fisker says it provides air to the air conditioner.

Fisker says the electric SUV it’s been revealing in dips and drabs for months is called the Ocean, and the company says it is no less than the “world’s most sustainable vehicle.”

The Ocean’s 182-inch length makes it about 2 inches longer than a Ford Escape. Fisker says the battery pack is “approximately” 80 kWh and the company is targeting a 250- to 300-mile range.

As for the sustainability claim, the company points out that the Ocean’s solar roof supports the battery, the recycled nylon carpeting is made from abandoned fishing nets pulled from the ocean, and the polyester interior materials are made from recycled plastic bottles.

Fisker also claims the Ocean’s production cycle is going to require the “lowest levels of polluting emissions and energy consumption,” but didn’t say exactly how.

Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2021 after a global unveiling via livestream on Jan 4, 2020. Early reservations open on a mobile app launching Nov. 27, 2019. Further details, including pricing, will be released on that date, though back in March CEO Henrik Fisker tweeted the car would start at less than $40,000.
