Hyundai\u2019s Vision FK Is 671 HP of Hydrogen Muscle

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles address one main problem often associated with electric vehicles: range anxiety. A fuel-cell works by generating power onboard to keep your batteries charged and your motors fed. While the technology might not be as popular as the growing battery-electric trend, companies like Toyota have established that there is at least some demand for hydrogen-powered passenger cars. And Hyundai is pushing for a hydrogen wave across its global portfolio. Sitting at the top of this prospective hydrogen product sheet is the Vision FK.

The Vision FK takes the aspirations of a greener future and cranks up the excitement. Powering this hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle is 671 hp worth of electric motors. Hyundai claims that this sporty concept can travel roughly 370 miles on a single tank, or via its plug-in battery system. About that battery system, it was developed alongside the electric supercar builder Rimac, which also further lends it some high-performance credentials.

Hyundai does have a history of pepping hydrogen fuel-cell products like the ix35 Fuel Cell and more recently the NEXO. That said, the Vision FK is just part of Hyundai’s push for wider hydrogen acceptance. The folks at Hyundai want to make hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles popular by 2040, and as cost-effective as a more traditional battery-electric vehicle by 2030.

This push for fuel-cell vehicles could help give those interested in battery-electric alternatives, and the aspirational timeline of 2040 does open the window of possibilities for Hyundai. Still, between advancing battery technology and a lack of hydrogen fuel stations, the 2040 timeline does still seem ambitious. Regardless, the Vision FK points at Hyundai’s dedication to performance, regardless of powertrain.
