New Volkswagen Golf Mk 8 Debuts October 24

Volkswagen will officially show the new eighth-generation Golf hatchback October 24 at an event in Wolfsburg, Germany. This teaser photo shows a glimpse at the design of the new model, which we’ve already seen a few times in prototype form wearing various disguises and camouflages. An interior sketch also shows a far more modern cockpit with a large touchscreen display, a digital gauge cluster, and a swoopier dashboard shape.

The car that will initially make its debut is the standard Golf hatchback, which may not come to the U.S. for this generation. Volkswagen has only confirmed Mk 8 GTI and Golf R hot hatchback variants for the U.S. market so far, and the Sportwagen and Alltrack models have been dropped and aren’t likely to return for American buyers as Volkswagen continues to shift its attention to SUVs in the U.S.A.

This means we will likely have to wait a while for any U.S.-specific Mk 8 Golf information that’s relevant to our market, as the GTI and Golf R will likely follow the standard Golf by several months. We’ve heard that the first versions of the car may not arrive for the U.S. until the 2021 model year. Stay tuned for more information to come as the Golf makes its official debut in a few weeks.
