The 2021 WRX STI Will Get 315 HP and Subaru's New Global Platform

The current Subaru WRX STI is getting up there in age, meaning a new one is likely just around the corner. Thanks to this report from Japanese-language site Best Car, we have some insight into what we might expect from Subaru’s rally sedan for 2021.

According to Best Car, the STI, as well as the WRX and Japan-only Levorg wagon, will get a major overhaul sometime in 2020. The biggest change will be the STI’s switch from the aging EJ20 (EJ25 for the US market) turbo flat-four to the new direct injection FA20-designated turbo flat-four. WRX models underwent this switch in the US back when the current model was introduced in 2014, though STIs have retained EJ-series motors up until now.

Best Car says the new FA20 STI engine will make 315 horsepower—just five more than the current STI’s 310. What isn’t clear is whether this 2.0-liter engine will make its way stateside—it’s more likely the US version of the new STI will get the 2.4-liter version of the FA, a variant of which currently powers the Ascent SUV. That engine could be massaged to make even more power, though Subaru hasn’t confirmed anything, so it’s hard to know for sure.

The Best Car report also says the fully redesigned STI will ride on Subaru’s global platform, which makes sense considering this is the architecture the company plans to use for virtually all of its new cars going forward.

In the meantime, the current-gen 2020 model-year WRX and WRX STI will receive a new limited edition variant dubbed the Series.White, according to a report by Torque News. Series.White cars will reportedly be painted in a color called Ceramic White, which has no metallic or pearl effect to differentiate it from the standard car’s metalflake white paint option. It’ll also get black badging and unique 19-inch wheels finished in black. According to Torque News, the Series.White will be limited to just 1000 examples—250 STIs and 750 WRXs.
