Counterintuitive as it may seem, Volvo’s jacked-up Cross Country wagons are popular with those who like to head off the beaten path in search of adventure. Volvo SUVs? As far as Cross Country aficionados are concerned, they’re strictly suburban warriors, meant for schlepping the kids to hockey practice or mooching down to the local mall.
The 2020 V60 Cross Country is essentially an AWD Volvo V60 with Fjallraven flair. The suspension has been revised to increase ground clearance by three inches, and the sills and fenders trimmed in scratch resistant black plastic. In addition to AWD the V60 Cross Country comes standard with hill descent control and an off-road mode programmed into the powertrain control system.
As sales numbers will be relatively small, Volvo Cars USA has limited the number of options available beyond the usual choice of color, interior trim, and wheels. For example, the turbo-only 250-hp, 258-lb/ft T5 variant of Volvo’s versatile 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will be the only powertrain offered when the car goes on sale in the U.S. mid-summer 2019. Pricing has yet to be announced, but is expected to start at about $40,000.
