Over the past few years, sport utility vehicles have been leaning harder on the “sport” side of the formula and leaving the utility in the breeze. The rise of the crossover “coupe” might ruffle some feathers, but it looks like the more fashion-forward variant of SUV body styles is here to stay. Volkswagen jumped into the fray with its Atlas Cross Sport and managed to do so without shoving the word “coupe” into the name.

The 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport is more than just an Atlas with a different top panel. Volkswagen shortened the Atlas 2.8 inches and lowered it by 2.3 inches The shorter overall length and breaking top does mean you won’t get the third row in the Cross Sport: not that you’d want to stuff your friends back there if one was available.

Cargo space suffers significantly, with the standard Atlas offering 96.8 cubic feet of space and the Atlas Cross Sport giving you a max cargo area of 77.8 cubic feet. That probably isn’t a big deal, unless you’re trying to stuff an entire family of suitcases into the back of your new crossover.

Under the sheetmetal, the Atlas Cross Sport is the same as the regular Atlas. The wheelbase is the same 117.3 inches for both Atlas variants. Powertrains are also the same, with the Atlas Cross Sport offering the choice of a 276 hp 3.6-liter V6 and a 235 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter I4. Both engines will run through a standard eight-speed automatic.

The Atlas Cross Sport will come standard with a forward-collision warning system that features autonomous braking, blind-spot monitoring and a rear traffic alert system. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go and Park Distance Control is available on higher trim lines. For those who want even more driver-assist features, Volkswagen’s Traffic Jam Assist and Dynamic Road Sign Display systems are both available. For those unfamiliar, Traffic Jam Assist takes care of the annoying slow-speed stop-and-go flow you see at rush hour, with the system taking care of accelerating and braking up until 37 mph. The Dynamic Road Sign Display helps remind you of what road signs you ignored, by showing them in the navigation screen.

You’ll be able to snag your Atlas Cross Sport in the spring of 2020. There’s no word on price, but the current Atlas will set you back $31,890. We doubt that will go down for the Atlas Cross Sport.
