2020 Volkswagen Passat teased ahead of Detroit debut

Ahead of January’s Detroit auto show, Volkswagen is teasing its mostly new 2020 Passat. Mostly new because despite all new sheetmetal — save the roof panels — the new Passat is built upon the same platform as its outgoing model. That means engines and transmissions probably won’t deviate too far from the outgoing model, either.

Under the hood of the 2020 model, you’ll find a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four. Volkswagen is still tight-lipped on the transmission details, but we’re expecting the six-speed to carry over from the previous models.

Well, since the platform and powertrain remain virtually the same, you might be wondering where the exactly the major changes are — as you can tell from these sketches, the exterior is completely updated. The current generation's styling is out the window; the 2020 Passat looks more aggressive with sculpted and creased sheetmetal. What you can’t see is a new interior, too. On the inside, the Passat gets an 8-inch standard touchscreen infotainment system stuffed into the center stack of the new dash. The seating position and seats are mostly unchanged.

You’ll get to see the Passat in the flesh if you head to the Detroit auto show this January. But if you can’t, we’ll have images up as soon as we can sneak a camera into the show and snap some pictures.
