GNCAP 2014-20: 8 out of 10 safest car brands are Indian!

Between 2014-2020, Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) completed safety assessments of 38 cars available in the Indian market. According to the results, 8 of the top 10 spots are occupied by Indian brands.

Five Tata cars, two Mahindra cars and one Maruti Suzuki product made it into the top 10. The Mahindra XUV300 gets the top position, while the Tata Altroz comes in the 2nd spot. Remaining cars on the list are Tata Nexon, Tata Tigor / Tiago, Volkswagen Polo, Mahindra Marazzo, Toyota Etios, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Zest.

The top 3 cars get a 5-star rating for adult protection. In case of Nexon, cars manufactured after December 7, 2019 get a 5-star rating while those before got a 4-star rating.

To incentivise automakers to build safer cars, Global NCAP had announced the ‘Safer Choice’ award at the 2018 Auto Expo. It will be awarded to those cars that achieve the highest levels of safety performance. To qualify for this award, a model must achieve a 5-star rating for adult occupant safety and 4-star rating for child occupant protection. The model must also offer ESC as standard and meet pedestrian protection requirements as per United Nations Regulations.
