We’re all excited to see the new Golf R, but what about hearing it? Fortunately, loose internets leak sec-urets and a new video posted to YouTube shows a Golf R revving in what appears to be an underground garage of some description.
The Golf R’s engine note may not receive the wide love it used to get in the VR6 days, but it’s still a pretty meaty sounding I4. It even makes a little exhaust pop at the end there, which is immature and wonderful in equal measures.
The video is short and just repeats over and over again, not that I’m complaining. But not everything about it is completely accurate. For one, we’re pretty sure VW isn’t bringing back the R32 name as is suggested in the title.
The second problem with the title is the power figure. Volkswagen did call the Mk8 Golf R the most powerful earlier today, but–look, don’t tell anyone you heard it from me–maybe don’t take that number as gospel.
For comparison purposes, here’s the Mk7 Golf R in a similar sort of location. The engine note shouldn’t be too different since the two engines are, if not the same, heavily related. Still, we’d say that this is a modest improvement.
