Honda adds a middle rung to its Civic based race car ladder with the Civic Type R TC

Honda Civic Type R TC car two-wheeling

Honda Performance Development, or HPD, just developed another way to spend your money. For $89,900 you can purchase the Civic Type R TC. A race car built from the Honda Civic, with a production-based Type R turbocharged 2.0-liter engine making between 270 and 330 horsepower, depending on which series you enter. You keep the manual transmission from the road car, but with strengthened third and fourth gears. The suspension is modified, similar to the Civic Si TCA car. The body is made of steel but modified to cool critical components. And the interior isn’t there, save for a roll-cage and a seat.

Immediately eligible for SRO TC Americas Touring Car racing, as long as you are a Honda Racing Line member and have a competition license, the factory-developed car slots in above the $52,00 Civic Si TCA car, but still well below the $172,238 Civic Type R TCR car. In addition to the race car, HPD also provides factory support, both engineering and parts as well as a technical support line, but not for free.

Still a six-speed manual. Looks quite proper without the plastic covering up the mechanics of it.

The net protects your head from swinging too violently in the case of side-impact.

Nothing makes an engineer more happy than data. Lots of data. Plenty for the driver to puruse as well.

It is, effectively, the same engine in the road going Honda Civic Type R.

The vented hood for the race car, to keep things from getting too hot.

To build it, Honda takes a Civic Body-in-White and adds a new front grill, a vented hood, a Borla downpipe and high-flow exhaust, an HPD/Cusco limited-slip differential, modified brakes, brake cooling, a new radiator, an oil-cooler, a 16-gallon fuel cell, a welded-in roll-cage, an OMP racing seat and six-point racing belts. Final assembly is performed by Gradient Racing in Austin Texas.

Think of it as a more powerful TCA car as you get quite close to TCR car power, but without the trick suspension and differential adjustment. And that’s quite okay. The Si TCA car is a pleasure to drive: tight and toss able. The TCR car is a mega car, but the adjustability available to you makes it a serious endeavor to drive, not to mention part costs. This may make the Type TC Goldilocks choice, assuming you have the funds.

If you do, but do not want to get involved with Honda Racing Line and/or the SRO, the Civic Type R TC is an SCCA T2 car and fits NASA ST5 and E2 classes. Happy Racing!
