New 2020 Mercedes E-Class facelift spied in All-Terrain form

Updated version of the Mercedes E-Class executive saloon to get light design tweaks and more electrification

The current Mercedes E-Class is edging towards the halfway point of its lifespan, as evidenced by these new spy shots revealing that Mercedes is currently developing a facelifted version of the fifth-generation model.

The car on camera here is a jacked up E-Class All Terrain, suggesting that Mercedes will refresh the entire E-Class line-up, consisting of the All-Terrain, conventional saloon and estate models, plus the Coupe and Cabriolet variants, in one fell swoop.

Our pictures hint that this will be a facelift similar in content to that of the one completed on the C-Class earlier this year. The masking applied to this E-Class All Terrain facelift mule is minor, covering the front apron, grille, headlights and taillights, so design changes will be limited to alterations in these areas.

The headlights are likely to get the same distinctive eyebrow lighting signature as seen on recent Mercedes releases, such as the latest CLS and the A-Class.

Changes inside should be pretty low-key too, with infotainment updates the order of the day. The new MBUX system will be integrated, introducing the Hey Mercedes voice activated assistant, a new infotainment user interface, plus a fresh steering wheel.

As for engines, the line-up shouldn’t alter too drastically, but more electrified options are inevitable. At the very top end of the line-up, AMG fettled models – both six-cylinder AMG 43 and V8 powered AMG 63 cars – could arrive with more power.

With prototypes hitting the road now, we expect a reveal of the facelifted E-Class within 12 months, before it goes on sale early in 2020.
