New Ford Mustang Mach-E leaked on Ford’s website

Ford has published details and pictures of the new all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUV ahead of its launch on 18 November

Ford has let the ‘Mach’ out of the bag early by accidentally publishing the first official pictures and details of the new Mustang Mach-E SUV on its website. The images and details on the car’s US pricing, specification and range were quickly removed by Ford but not before screenshots were taken. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s vision for its electric car future and is due to be revealed in full on Monday at a special event ahead of the 2019 LA Motor Show.

Following the spy shots and Ford’s own teaser campaign for this crucial new car, these leaked, undisguised images finally reveal how the Mustang Mach-E will look. We can see the SUV’s curvaceous bodywork and design similarities to the existing Ford Mustang coupe, including the low nose, long bonnet and flared haunches. At the rear, the tri-bar light design and lift-back boot-lid are also carried over.

The leaked interior picture reveals a huge tablet-style display screen at the centre of the cabin with a rotary controller at its base. A second digital read-out sits ahead of the driver but the rest of the design adopts a minimalist approach for an overall look with strong similarities to Tesla’s interiors.

From the leaked information, we also learn that the Ford Mustang Mach-E will be available in four trim levels as well as a limited-run First Edition variant. Select, Premium, California Route 1 and GT models are also being offered in the US with prices ranging from $43,895 to $60,500 (£37,500 to £47,000) but there’s no word on UK prices as yet.

There’s the option of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive models, with estimated EPA electric ranges of the various drivetrains standing between 230 miles and 300 miles depending on the specification. 0–60mph performance is predicted to vary between around 3.5 seconds for the GT to 6.5 seconds for the extended range models. Ford also says that the Mach-E will be able to recover a 47-mile charge in 10 minutes from a 150kw charger.

Ford originally planned to launch a practical all-electric SUV but, to stand out from the rest of the market, the American company changed tack, deciding to launch it as a performance model instead. Ford’s aim is to “infuse” the Mach E with the image, performance and style of the Mustang.

Ford recently doubled its investment in electric vehicles to $11 billion (roughly £8 billion). Darren Palmer, Team Edison’s global product development director, expects this outlay to bring 16 fully electric vehicles into a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles by 2022.
