New Maserati electric powertrain enters testing phase

Maserati’s all-new all-electric powertrain is being readied for use in the next-generation GranTurismo and GranCabrio

Maserati has begun testing its first all-electric powertrain, a teaser video (below) released by the Italian manufacturer has confirmed.

The first models to use the electric powertrain will be the new Maserati GranTurismo in 2021, followed by the GranCabrio in 2022, Maserati confirmed in a statement.

Unlike most electric motors, which are refined and silent, Maserati says its engineers are deliberately working to produce a noisy electric motor, to create a noise which can replace the sound of the company’s trademark 4.7-litre V8. The sound of the prototype vehicle in Maserati’s latest teaser clip gives an indication of the brand’s intent.

Maserati’s all-electric powertrain will feature three electric motors, all-wheel-drive and a torque vectoring system – while promising short charge times, limited cabin intrusion and a long driving range. Official performance figures are still unknown but, to keep pace with the the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, expect an output in excess of 600bhp.

This teaser video follows our recent official images of a heavily camouflaged, mid-engined Maserati prototype, which the company is using to develop its upcoming powertrains. The mule is a modified version of the Alfa Romeo 4C, with a wider front and rear track, enormous engine intakes and oversized alloy wheels squeezed under a set of flared wheel arches.
