New Skoda Superb: first official look at 2019 facelift

Fresh design sketch previews the Skoda Superb’s revised styling as facelifted flagship model prepares for launch

This is our first official look at the revised Skoda Superb, which is due to be revealed in the coming weeks. As part of its mid-life facelift, the Czech brand’s flagship model will undergo a minor cosmetic overhaul, as well as a technical redesign, borrowing technology from the latest Volkswagen Passat.

Judging by Skoda’s official render, updates to the new Superb’s styling will include a pair of revised headlights, a redesigned radiator grille and a fresh front bumper with LED fog lamps. Tweaked rear lamps and a new rear bumper will also likely feature, along with an updated interior which adopts the VW Group’s latest digital gauge cluster and infotainment system.

However, the biggest change for the 2019 Superb will be its adoption of plug-in hybrid technology for the first time. Skoda plans to use the same electrified drivetrain as the Volkswagen Passat GTE, which mixes a turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with a gearbox-mounted electric motor and 13kWh battery for a combined output of 215bhp.

Elsewhere, the latest Superb will inherit the Passat’s conventionally-powered engines, comprising of three petrol and four diesel options, with the former offering outputs between 148bhp and 268bhp and the latter between 118bhp and 237bhp. Entry level models will come as standard with a six speed manual transmission, while the most powerful versions will be fitted with a seven-speed DSG and a four-wheel-drive system.

Skoda’s marketing boss, Alain Favey, confirmed the Superb PHEV will be the only hybrid in the range. He said: “It will be one powertrain, the hybrid, and it will be offered on different trims. Of course, electrified vehicles have a slightly higher price point, but we want to make it as accessible as possible so we think it’s good to offer this variation.”
