Norway: 1st country to register over 50% of new cars as EVs

54.3 percent of new cars sold Norway in 2020 were electric vehicles.

According to a media report, Norway has become the first country where electric cars make up over 50% of the total new car sales.

The highest selling models in Norway for the year 2020 include the Audi e-tron, Tesla Model 3, Volkswagen ID.3, Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen Golf. All these, barring the Golf, are all-electric vehicles. That said, even the Golf is offered in a rechargeable electric hybrid option.

According to data by the Opplysningsradet for Veitrafikken (Norway’s Information Council for Road Traffic), 54.3 percent of new cars sold in 2020 were electric vehicles. In 2019, the figure stood at 42.4 percent.

Norway is the largest producer of oil in Western Europe, but it is also quickly adopting electric vehicles thanks to government subsidies. By 2025, the country aims to sell only zero emission cars.
