Renault to pay 2 lakh compensation for fake lucky draw

According to a media report, Renault has been directed by the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Kollam to pay Rs. 2 lakh as compensation for not carrying out a lucky draw in a transparent manner.

The report suggests that a complaint was filed under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act. According to the complaint, advertisements were put up in daily newspapers and on television channels in Cochin during the 2014 Onam festival season. The advertisements said that those who booked a Renault vehicle in August 2014 would be eligible to win 5 Duster cars in a lucky draw.

The complainant booked a Duster on August 16, 2014 and was given a lucky draw coupon. The car was soon delivered. The complainant then followed up with the Manager of Renault Cochin regarding the lucky draw, but his queries were left unanswered. He was told that the results would be intimated through SMS, but that did not happen.

The complainant accused that there was no proof that the lucky draw was conducted and hence, it constituted unfair trade practice, deficiency of service and cheating of customers.

The forum found that the lucky draw was not conducted in a transparent manner and results were not published. Renault has been directed to pay Rs. 2 lakh as compensation to the complainant for the pain, suffering and mental agony caused. Renault has also been directed to pay Rs. 10,000 to cover costs.
