Report: Expect a Ford Explorer debut ahead of the Detroit auto show

Ford Motor Co. plans to reveal the next-generation Ford Explorer crossover on Jan. 9 at an off-site event the week before the Detroit auto show.

The next-generation Explorer was designed and engineered on a new rear-wheel-drive platform shared by its luxury counterpart, the Lincoln Aviator. And like the Aviator, Ford is expected to offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Explorer.

The automaker will use Ford Field, home of the NFL's Detroit Lions and owned by the Ford family, to introduce the 2020 Explorer.

The Explorer's new styling broke cover early this year when spy photographers caught the Police Interceptor model virtually undisguised.

Based on the latest photographs, the Explorer Interceptor features a more rakish profile, a plastic mesh-esque grille, sharper headlights and sculpted LED fog lights. The Interceptor will feature additional cargo capacity while passenger volume will remain flat, according to Ford's website.
