Report: Next-Gen A3 to Debut Later this Year

As with the last generation of A3, we’re expecting an A3 sedan designed pretty specifically for the US market. Car and Driver reports today that the sedan version is set to launch later this year as a 2021 model.

The outlet cites unnamed sources, so take from that what you will, but it reports that the A3 sedan will go on sale in the late part of 2020, too. It also says there will be a plug-in hybrid version sold as a Sportback (read: hatchback).

Otherwise, it’s pretty much as you’d expect. It will look an awful lot like the A3 Sportback, except with a trunk. That means it will also have the infotainment system with multiple screens and the same interior quality.

Don’t expect a TDI, but a 2.0-liter TSI making 240 hp should be your base option. That may run through the front wheels for the base model, but AWD should come pretty quickly after that. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system will also come here, according to C&D.

The S3 will reportedly make 300 hp and the RS3 is expected to make somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 hp.
