A new report out of Germany suggests that the next-gen Volkswagen Golf GTI could be better than the current Golf R. That’s thanks to a massive power boost bringing the car up to 300 hp.
German publication Autobild is talking Golf 8 GTI. The all-new model is expected to get the usual list of changes. Like new bumpers and larger air intakes. Plus red trim and all of the usual suspect GTI modifications.
But where you might expect a modest boost from the 217 hp the current car’s 2.0L turbo four offers. Maybe the Performance model’s 228 hp for the base car and another 10 for a new performance pack? Expect more, according to Autobild. Lots more. How about 245 hp for the base car.
That’s definitely a healthy shove, but it’s not enough.
How about up to 300 hp from the performance model? That’s what they’re saying to expect from the new car. That would give the new GTI more power than the current Golf R’s 288. And, unlike the R, the GTI will keep doing it through just two wheels. Making it likely a handful of fun. Maybe even a replacement for the Clubsport S that we never saw in North America.
It’s also good news if you’re dreaming of the next R. Because if it continues, it’s going to need to have a big power increase too. Can’t have the lowly GTI stepping on your hooves.
