Skoda Superb 3.6 V6 Elegance | Spotted

Need cavernous space and grunty, all-weather power for less? Look no further…

It’s the day after the Euro finals, and we’ve run out of fancy synonyms, so we’ll open with: “Wow, isn’t the Skoda Superb really superb.” Bear with us, okay. But, in all seriousness, this Skoda Superb is indeed worth your while to take a second look at, for one simple reason: it features the legendary VR6 unit in its larger, direct-injected guise.

For the slightly less educated, or foggy headed, that means a 260hp, 3.6-litre V6 unit, packed into a family soccer-mom estate. Well, Tarquin isn’t going to be picked for the team if he’s late now, is he. Even in detuned format versus the lauded Passat R36, that translated to a top speed of 155mph and a 0-62mph time of just 6.5 seconds; enough to make every passenger vomit on cue.

Granted, the combination was not intended to be an uber-wagon in the tried-and-tested Audi style – the flagship Superb was more about crushing continents than devouring your local B road – but it was still paired with four-wheel drive and a six-speed DSG gearbox, and still went about its business with a soundtrack you won’t find in any other Skoda-badged variant.

Consequently, it’s easy to still rate the combination today; its enormous interior is unmatched within its class, but doesn’t seem out of place when combined with the narrow-angle V6 under the bonnet. Sophisticated manners made it a breeze to drive on the road, even if the ride quality wasn’t quite on par with less focused and smaller-wheeled versions of the Superb.

It’s a very rare example – Skoda didn’t build or sell a huge number – and according to the dealer, is the only one for sale in the UK right now (it’s definitely the only one in the PH classifieds). Ten years after it was launched as a fully-loaded, big-family option for around £27k, you can get this example for a smidgen under £8.5k.

With a spec list that covers everything from heated front seats in full leather, xenon lights, heated door mirrors and washer nozzles, and sat-nav with SD card reader and MP3 integration, the Elegance trim lives up to its billing. If you’re not ready to give up the hot-hatch dream, but now have more than just empty McDonalds wrappers to put on your back seats, the V6 Superb is a sneakily good choice.
