If you were scrolling through your Twitter feed today and wondered if you’d woken up in a parallel universe where DeLorean still exists, we wouldn’t blame you. What you’re looking at here is a Tesla Cybertruck, and it looks like a DMC had a baby with the Mars Rover.

It might look like it belongs in a sci-fi film, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that the vehicle is not far from being production-ready.

The body is made from “ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel,” and is supposedly strong enough to withstand 9mm rounds. Attempts to prove the Cybertruck’s hardiness at the reveal event didn’t go so well, however, with the company’s design chief managing to break two side windows with a metal ball. Oops.

There’s a 6.5-foot load bay – just like a Ford F-150 – in which you’ll find 2800 litres of storage space. It’s covered by a panel that’s able to slide to the ground behind the Cybertruck, making it easy to load something like an ATV into the back. Hashtaglifestyle.

It wouldn’t be a Tesla without some impressive stats, and sure enough, the Cybertruck has plenty of them. Even the entry-level single motor, rear-wheel drive one is fairly handy, with a claimed “250+” range, a 0-60mph time under 6.5 seconds and a towing capacity of 3400kg.

The mid-range dual-motor, all-wheel drive version will be able to go over 300 miles on a single charge, crack 60mph in around 4.5 seconds and haul up to 4500kg. Finally, the tri-motor Cybertruck will – Tesla says – have a range of over 500 miles, hit 60mph in 2.9 seconds and be happy towing 6300kg. No battery capacities have been quoted thus far.

It’ll be underpinned by air springs, which will give the Cybertruck a maximum ride height of 400mm.

In the cabin, there’s seating for six, and – of course – a massive ruddy tablet in the middle of the dashboard. We can guarantee the weird aviation-style yoke thing won’t make production.

Perhaps the most astonishing thing of all is the price for this bizarre slice of futurism – it’ll start at just $39,900, Tesla says, rising to $69,900 for the tri-motor version. The entry point won’t be here until 2021, though, and the range-topper is even further away – you’ll have to wait until 2022 for that.
