Alain Prost: Renault engine problems 'unavoidable'

Renault advisor Alain Prost believes the team’s current reliability issues are “unavoidable”.

MGU-K issues have plagued the French manufacturer so far this season, with the low point coming in Bahrain when both Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo retired at the same time from points-paying positions.

Four-time World Champion Prost believes though, that these issues are to be expected and that soon, Renault will “once again be one of the best engines in Formula One”.

“We know we’re pretty close to the limit right now,” Prost told Sky Sports F1.

“Reliability problems are sometimes unavoidable, it’s part of the game and we have to accept that. We will once again be one of the best engines in Formula One.

“Nobody talks about it, but we have the data, we’ll do it step by step and we’ll make it.”

Ricciardo has had a tricky start to life with the team, but his P7 finish in qualifying and the race in China suggested he is now getting to grips with the R.S.19.

Prost though has assured the Australian that these teething problems would occur, and expects him to improve as he grows accustomed to being away from the Red Bull set-up.

“It is inevitable that such things appear – I told him so,” Prost added.

“Red Bull’s philosophy is quite special, and it’s difficult to be in a new team.”
