'AlphaTauri preparing a back up team in case of positive test'

AlphaTauri is putting together an “exchange team” of mechanics who can be called up if someone from the first team has a positive test.

Formula 1 is preparing to start the 2020 season in July, hopefully with a double-header at the Red Bull Ring.

The circus will then move onto Silverstone before tackling other venues around Europe.

F1 chief Chase Carey has already stated that the first few races will all be held behind closed doors with everyone in the paddock tested every two days.

The teams will be asked to keep their numbers down while also not integrating with other teams.

Despite the steps that Formula 1 is taking to keep people safe, AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost acknowledges that there is still a possibility that someone could test positive.

“If an employee is infected by the virus, there is no discussion at all,” he told Süddeutsche Zeitung.

“He must either go to the hospital immediately or go to quarantine at home.

“The decision depends on the severity of the case.”

There are, however, others consequences to a positive test as it will mean everyone who has been in contact with that person will need to self-isolate.

As such AlphaTauri is preparing a back up team to take over the duties.

“Then you have to replace the team,” Tost continued.

“We are currently preparing an exchange team that we can bring [to races].”
