Alpine junior Collet quickest in Day 2 of F3 test

Alpine academy member and MP Motorsport driver Caio Collet went fastest on the second day of Formula 3 testing in Austria.

On day one of testing, ART driver Alexandr Smolyar had topped the timesheets just ahead of Jonny Edgar and Frederik Vesti, with Collet ending the day in P11.

The Brazilian enjoyed similar fortunes in the Sunday morning session which was delayed due to snowy conditions, finishing it in P10.

Calan Williams of Jenzer Motorsport went fastest with a time of 1:18.836, which was narrowly quicker than Smolyar’s Saturday time and thus a track record.

Like on Saturday though, conditions improved and times dropped considerably in the afternoon session, with a number of drivers heading into the mid 1:18s.

Of them, Collet looked quickest early on but saw his time beaten by Prema Racing’s Dennis Hauger, who was fifth fastest on the first day of testing.

As the session entered its final hour though, the Alpine junior driver found some more pace and posted a time of 1:18.592 to go top and stay there until the end of the day.

Hauger claimed P2, going just over a tenth slower, while Zak Crawford, a Red Bull product, finished in P3 for the second time in two days.

Further down the order, Juan Manuel Correa continued to impress as he makes his official return to racing after recovering from injuries sustained in the horrific F2 crash at Spa in 2019.

His fastest time of the day, a 1:19.189, came in the morning and was enough to give him P11. In total, he completed 80 laps across the two sessions.

F3 will now leave the hills of Austria with the next pre-season test coming in Barcelona on April 21-22.

The opening round of the campaign will also take place there from May 7-9 and feature three races as the sport introduces a radical new format.

After that round, a third testing session will be held at Jerez.
