Caruso to sub for Stanaway again at Queensland

Michael Caruso will make a second consecutive Supercars outing with Garry Rogers Motorsport at Queensland later this month, with team’s regular driver Richie Stanaway still not fully fit from a recurring neck injury.

Stanaway has been sidelined from racing since the second race at Winton in May, and GRM’s sponsor Boost Mobile recently urged the 27-year-old not to rush into a return.

Stanaway was initially replaced by GRM enduro driver Chris Pither for the second race at Winton and both hit-outs at Darwin, before it drafted in Caruso for the Townsville round.

Caruso, who missed out on a full-time drive for this season, has now been called in again for the Queensland round scheduled for July 27-28.

The Supercars veteran finished ninth in the second of the two races at Townsville, two places behind teammate James Golding, who secured the team’s best result of the season in seventh.

“We wanted to have some consistency, rather than be chopping and changing again,” team boss Garry Rogers told Supercars.com.

“Chris was an obvious option, but we think he’s well and truly ready for the enduros, and we didn’t want to get into the process of applying for special consideration to do more events.

“From a performance point of view, we need to find something, and having the consistency from Townsville should be a good thing for us.

“Michael impressed us with his leadership and his attitude in Townsville, he was focused not on achieving something for himself, but assisting us as much as he could.
